Katie Unland Honored as HBCSD Teacher of the Year

Huntington Beach City School District (HBCSD) proudly announces that Mrs. Katie Unland of Moffett Elementary School has been named the 2027 Teacher of the Year. This recognition celebrates educators who exemplify excellence in the classroom, inspire students to reach their highest potential, and strengthen the school community through leadership and service.
For 27 years, Katie Unland has dedicated her career to guiding fifth-grade students through one of the most pivotal years of their elementary journey. Katie is known for maintaining high expectations while creating a classroom environment grounded in care, structure, and belonging.
Each morning in her classroom begins with a powerful affirmation: “I am smarter than I think, I am braver than I seem, I am stronger than I feel… I can do hard things.”
These words reflect Katie’s deeply held belief that every child is capable of rising to meaningful challenges when supported and encouraged. She sees potential in her students even when they struggle to see it in themselves.
Her classroom is purposeful and engaging. Whether leading thoughtful discussions around literature like Wonder, guiding students through collaborative math challenges, or bringing history to life through personal connections and critical analysis, Katie creates learning experiences that foster empathy, resilience, and intellectual curiosity. She intentionally balances academic rigor with flexibility and empathy, recognizing that each student brings unique strengths and needs to the classroom
“Katie is a master teacher whose classroom reflects both rigor and care,” shared Moffett Principal Michelle Brady. “She holds high confidence for every student and is committed to preparing them for the academic and organizational demands of middle school.”
Beyond her classroom, Katie is a respected leader on campus and across the District. She serves as Student Council Advisor, mentoring young leaders as they organize service projects, fundraising efforts, and schoolwide initiatives that strengthen campus culture. Under her guidance, the Student Council has led countless community outreach efforts, from supporting local families and military members to partnering with organizations such as Second Harvest Food Bank and the American Cancer Society
Her leadership extends to mentoring new teachers, contributing to district curriculum work through the Critical Concepts Team, and serving as a GATE liaison and instructional leader. Colleagues describe her as steady, collaborative, and deeply committed to student success.
“Katie represents the very best of our profession,” Brady added. “Families trust her, colleagues rely on her, and students thrive under her guidance.”
At the heart of Katie’s philosophy is the belief that students rise to the level of expectations when those expectations are communicated clearly and supported consistently. She views fifth grade as a bridge year, one that prepares students not only academically, but socially and organizationally for the independence of middle school. Her goal is for students to leave her classroom confident in their ability to persevere and meet challenges head-on
District leadership and administrators surprised Katie at Moffett Elementary, celebrating her well-earned achievement alongside colleagues and students. She will be formally recognized by the HBCSD Board of Trustees at an upcoming Board meeting and honored at the 2027 Orange County Teachers of the Year Awards celebration.
“Katie Unland embodies the excellence, integrity, and heart of HBCSD,” said Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Robert Miller. “Her dedication to students and her leadership across our District make her exceptionally deserving of this honor.”
Congratulations to Mrs. Katie Unland for her extraordinary devotion to education and for the lasting impact she continues to make on generations of Moffett Mustangs.
